What Coaching is
Coaching is a way of combining listening and questioning to support the client in identifying the most productive first step towards their desired goals and when that has been implemented, the next step. Very often getting to recognise what the first step is and to have the courage to take it are the most difficult parts of all. By following this structured process clients take progressive steps and work their way through the haze until their dreams/goals become their reality. Built into the process are also stages that identify when a dream is unrealistic for becoming reality.
Imagine for a moment that your dream is to become a top surgeon. You are over 40, do not have a medical background and are squeamish at the sight of blood; or to become a world famous and very rich artist within 5 years when, by your own admission you can't draw or paint anything recognisable. The reality check may well indicate that you are unlikely to achieve your dream.
So long as your dream is realistic, and it can still be extremely stretching, coaching will help a coachee to do what's you needed to be done in order to achieve, be it: improving interpersonal skills and building relationships; gaining promotion; improving your products or giving up an undesirable habit. An effective coach is impartial and non - judgemental.
Key to the entire process is that the goal is the client's and that the client is taking full responsibility for making the change. It helps the client to be the best they can be, whether that is in happiness, productivity or achievement, in whatever area they choose to be coached.
